Blaise Nzilampa teaches classes with 40 to 60 students. To hold their attention, he uses a simple but effective system. When he asks a question he throws a ball to the students who has to answer.

Blaise Nzilampa, teacher agricultural techniques: “I teach very big classes. Even if I prepare my lessons well, it is difficult to hold the attention of every student. They are easily distracted and they can hardly stay awake. That is why I teach with a ball in my hand. I regularly ask a question to the class and throw the ball to one of the students. He or she has to answer the question. Afterwards, this student can choose who comes next. Since I use this ball, I notice that they pay much more attention. They keep their eyes on me because they know that I can ask a question every moment and that the ball can come their way. Of course, I let everyone take the turn. They really try their best to pay attention. They find it annoying when they catch the ball and they don't know the answer to the question. Then they have to appoint a student who knows the answer. I feel that they are more motivated and that reflects on me.”
